Meet the Scout

Warlords of Draenor goes live on EU servers in thirty minutes! Whoo!

This time, I’m going to do things a little differently. Every expansion launch up until now I have been mostly playing as Alliance.

This time, I’m going in as a member of the Red Team.

Arnwald, the Hunter
A great many frogs were harmed during the creation of this equipment.

Scout Arnwald was the first character I created when I began playing World of Warcraft in May 2005. I had neglected him for the last couple of years, only popping on now and again for world events and the like. I managed to get him to Level 60 before the Burning Crusade expansion launched, and pretty much stayed there for a long time. I eventually managed to get him up to Level 73 while questing with my fiancée’s Priest, and I used the free character boost that came with pre-ordering the Warlords of Draenor expansion to finally get him to Level 90.

Arnwald will be my main throughout the Draenor campaign, but I will do my best to make sure my other characters get some love as well.

Lok’tar ogar, heroes. Victory or death!

State of Development – August 2014

Warlords of Draenor now has a release date of November 13th 2014 and Patch 6.0 is due to hit live servers in September or October. Many addon authors, including myself, have been scrambling around making sure your favourite addons will continue to work when the patch goes live.

Here’s a quick summary of my current state of development:

  • Accomplishment – NO ERRORS.
  • AutoEquipQuestItem – NO ERRORS.
  • BigWigs Crowd Control – UNTESTED as I have not yet joined a raid in the beta.
  • BottleCap – NO ERRORS.
  • Broker oQueue – UNTESTED as oQueue’s future is currently unknown.
  • Broker uClock – NO ERRORS.
  • Chinchilla Minimap – WILL CAUSE ERRORS but an updated alpha package is available.
  • Colourblind Mode – NO ERRORS although major features currently do not work as advertised.
  • EPGP Filter – UNTESTED as I am not in a guild that uses the EPGP loot system.
  • EPGP Priority Output – UNTESTED as I am not in a guild that uses the EPGP loot system.
  • FuBar uClock – DISCONTINUED. Please download Broker uClock instead.
  • HandyNotes Hallow’s End – UNTESTED as HandyNotes and LibAstrolabe are causing errors.
  • HandyNotes Lunar Festival – UNTESTED as HandyNotes and LibAstrolabe are causing errors.
  • HandyNotes Summer Festival – UNTESTED as HandyNotes and LibAstrolabe are causing errors.
  • ItemGuard – NO ERRORS.
  • Jaedia’s Menagerie – NO ERRORS.
  • MogIt Highlighter – NO ERRORS.
  • PetEmote – NO ERRORS.
  • SignOn – NO ERRORS.
  • TourGuide Lunar Festival – DISCONTINUED. Please download HandyNotes Lunar Festival instead.
  • TourGuide Summer Festival – DISCONTINUED. Please download HandyNotes Summer Festival instead.
  • TradeSkillInfo – NO ERRORS but the recipe database will be out of date and a major update is in progress.
  • Visor2 GUI – NO ERRORS.

Amazingly, only the current v2.6 release of Chinchilla Minimap is known to cause errors with Patch 6.0 and I have since fixed the problems. Alpha packages v2.6-24 and onwards will work fine with the current Warlords of Draenor beta build, but will not work for Patch 5.4.8 live servers. A v2.6.1 release package for Chinchilla will be made available for download once Patch 6.0 is deployed on live servers.

Colourblind Mode will work without errors but the colour shaders introduced in Patch 4.3 either do not work or have been removed. I will keep an eye on this and hope that this can be fixed either by me or Blizzard themselves.

My main focus right now is to continue working on overhauling TradeSkillInfo, however I am making excellent progress and if everything goes well I hope to share the major changes in a future post. The majority of my other projects appear to be working fine and only need to be flagged as “up-to-date” in World of Warcraft’s addons list. Of course, if any errors do crop up I will investigate and fix them as soon as possible.

Happy testing, and I’ll see you in Draenor!

AddOns Enabled in the Warlords of Draenor Beta

In the beta test of the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion pack AddOns were completely disabled to allow Blizzard to discern between client errors (bugs in their own code) and third-party errors (bugs in addon code). It has been a while since the beta started and in a recent update addons were re-enabled to allow addon authors to make sure their projects will work when Patch 6.0 and Warlords of Draenor go live.

In a pre-Warlords of Draenor patch, there will be a number of updates and changes to functions that affect how User Interface Add-Ons will work. Add-Ons in the Beta client has been enabled and will allow UI Add-On authors will have a chance to work on updating their Add-Ons and test these changes out.

Source

I have not yet received a beta invite for Warlords of Draenor but when I do I will make sure everything will work. Looking at the current list of changes suggests everything will work fine at present, so hopefully any necessary changes will be minimal (although the new C_Timer.After() API is an interest).

Should you run into any problems before I am invited to the beta feel free to contact me on Twitter, or file a bug report on GitHub, WoWinterface or Curse. I read every message and investigate every bug report I receive.

Happy testing!

State of Development – June 2014

The observant among you will have noticed that I haven’t been very active lately.

The truth is, I needed to take a break from WoW for a while. I had a disagreement with a high-ranking guild member after a failed Heroic Firelands fun run and haven’t logged in since. My disappearance has nothing to do with a certain sexist article from a certain Blizzard employee, although it definitely didn’t help.

I also moved house in February and we’re still unpacking and decorating. But the computers are set up and we have carpets! And furniture! And stuff!

So what does this mean for the addons I maintain? I haven’t given them the regular maintenance I usually do but I haven’t forgotten about them either. I have received several feature requests for MogIt Highlighter and I would love to integrate them. And with the Warlords of Draenor expansion due for release in December, the majority of my addons will need a patch to bring them back up to date.

I will return to WoW one day. I miss playing and I have some exciting updates I want to make to my addons (well, they’re exciting for me at least). For example, TradeSkillInfo now has a working dataminer so maintaining the recipe database will be a hell of a lot easier!

This is not “goodbye”. It’s more of a “be back in a bit”.

Bucket List Update: “Goodbye Cataclysm” edition

There’s less than three hours left until Mists of Pandaria launches on EU realms and it’s high time I posted an update for my bucket list.

  1. Transfer characters. (complete)
Ulbrecht and Innis have been successfully transferred and are enjoying their new home!
  2. Buy heirlooms. (complete)
I have gathered all the agility leather heirlooms, a weapon, trinkets and even managed to snag the Dread Pirate Ring for my Pandaren Monk!
  3. Loremaster. (failed)
Sadly, I ran out of time. Patch 5.0.4 came out shortly after I posted about my preparation plans and added Loremaster of Pandaria as a requirement to the meta achievement. Icecrown was the last zone I needed to complete, but I simply ran out of time.
Only 105 quests away from "The Loremaster"... I was so close!
Only 105 quests away from “The Loremaster”… I was so close!
  4. Max out Ysaera’s secondary professions. (failed)
I am happy with the progress I made and managed to max out Ysaera’s cooking, fishing, and first aid successfully. I neglected her archaeology and it remains at 165/225.
  5. Transmogrification. (complete)
All of Ysaera’s planned transmogrification items have been obtained, along with a few bonus items that fit the look very well.
  6. Level alts to 85. (failed)
Suranyu remains at Level 84. I tried my best but I couldn’t find the time or the willingness to continue levelling.
  7. Collect as many mounts and minipets as possible. (complete)
Thanks to account-wide minipets I now have 168 unique companions in my collection, enough to get the celestial dragon companion.
  8. Get as much gold as possible. (complete)
I managed to raise a total of over 120,000 gold across all of my characters. That’ll do pig, that’ll do.

Despite not completing everything I wanted to do, overall I am happy with the progress I made. There’s plenty left for me to get on with in Pandaria, and lots of other things in the “old worlds” to complete if I get the urge to.
